Burton developed a passion for racing go-carts while growing up in Southwest Virginia. Then in 1985, he decided to take a hiatus from racing to fulfill another lifelong dream – to become a Trooper. He joined the Virginia State Police and graduated from the 76th Basic Academy. Trooper Martin is currently assigned to the Safety Division in Wytheville. Martin returned to racing in 1989 choosing a racecar as his ride. For the next 12 years he tore up the half-mile dirt track in Wythe County, accumulating a Track Championship and over 50 First Place finishes. In 2001, the Help Eliminate Auto Theft (H.E.A.T.) Program asked Martin to be the driver of the H.E.A.T. racecar. Now, whether Martin is on or off the track he is always in hot pursuit of auto thieves. On the track he drives the #21 Late Model H.E.A.T. Chevrolet Monte Carlo as he competes in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series. Off the track he drives a state police cruiser.
