OPERATION HEAT WAVE

Purpose and Objectives

Operation HEAT WAVE is a statewide effort of law enforcement agencies (police departments, sheriff’s offices, etc.) to:

  • increase public awareness of the Help Eliminate Auto Theft program;
  • familiarize citizens with the toll-free telephone number (1-800-947-HEAT); and
  • encourage citizen participation in helping to eliminate auto theft in Virginia by calling in tips on auto-theft activity.

Requirements

Operation HEAT WAVE participants are asked to:

  • conduct activities which will help to increase public awareness of the HEAT program and familiarize citizens with the toll-free number (1-800-947-HEAT); and
  • submit reports outlining activities (easy-to-use reporting forms are included in this packet).

Recognition


Operation HEAT WAVE participants will be recognized for their efforts.

  • Certificates of appreciation will be presented to the Chief/Sheriff and Operation HEAT WAVE Coordinator of every agency that conducts and reports at least one public awareness activity.
  • First, Second and Third Place awards will be presented to the Chiefs/Sheriffs and Operation HEAT WAVE Coordinators of agencies in each of the seven Virginia State Police Divisions.

Award Criteria

Operation HEAT WAVE eligibility for the first, second and third place awards include:

  • Conduct and report at least two public awareness activities;
  • Number of activities conducted in excess of the two minimum activities; and
  • Numbers of people reached (to accommodate for different size agencies, consideration will be given to the size of the population served by the agency).

Activity reports during 2011-2012 will be collected quarterly. The due dates of these reports are as follows:
