Purpose
The purpose of the LEO Awards program is to assist in eliminating auto theft in Virginia by recognizing Law Enforcement Officers throughout the state for their special efforts in auto theft reduction including:

  • Intelligence;
  • Prevention;
  • Enforcement; and
  • Recoveries.

Sponsor
The Virginia Department of State Police H.E.A.T. Program.

Eligibility
The following are eligible for LEO awards:

  • All Virginia State Police and Criminal Intelligence analysts;
  • Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles law enforcement officers and customer service representatives; and
  • Officers of agencies that are Operation HEAT WAVE participants.

Awards
First, Second and Third Place Awards are made in each of the following groups: Groups 1 through 7

  • Law enforcement officers in the seven Virginia State Police geographic divisions with awards in each division awarded based of the size of the agency:
    Category 1: 401+officers; Category 2: 101 to 400 officers; and Category 3: 1 to 100 officers

Group 8

  • Virginia State Police officers and Criminal Intelligence analysts

Group 9

  • DMV law enforcement officers and customer service representatives.

Awards will consist of a certificate and a prize; actual prize items to be announced at a later date.

Nominations
Nominations for the 2011 Awards may be made on the Nomination Form (Word document) by the Chief or the Sheriff of law enforcement agencies participating in Operation HEAT WAVE, by the Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, and by the Superintendent of the Virginia State Police. Deadline of January 31, 2012.

Judging
Winners will be selected by the LEO Awards committee, made up of a wide spectrum of individuals including representatives of law enforcement and the insurance industry.

Notification of Winners
Officers will be notified by mail that he/she has been named a LEO award winner, with a copy of the letter to his/her Chief or Sheriff.
